Creative Writing - Short Stories - an Introduction

UPDATED 20151112 11:44:19

Is this the right course for me? Short stories come in many different shapes and lengths. On the day we will look at some of the markets and how to create a story for them. The course is suitable for beginners or for anyone who already writes in a different medium. All you need is a mind open to creativity and a desire to give it a go. What will I learn? We will start the day by looking at ideas and how to generate them. Then we will explore the potential for the ideas and look at the different markets to aim for. We will look at structure and story, dialogue and most important of all, character. Using existing markets and competitions each learner will be encouraged to develop an idea for a short story. During the day we will work on openings, aiming to create characters and ideas that excite and inspire from the first paragraph. Finally we will look at endings and character journeys. By the end of the day each learner should Have an understanding of how to generate and develop ideas Understand the importance of knowing the target market Have the basic idea for a short story Have written (in rough) the opening for a short story Be prepared to go home and write a short story How will I learn? You will learn through handouts and by studying examples, as well as lots of group discussion and activities. Will I gain a qualification? You will not gain a formal qualification but you may request a Certificate of Attendance from your tutor. What can I do next? By the end of the workshop you should be prepared to write short stories or you could enrol on a longer Creative Writing course.
