Classical Civilisation is an academic yet very multi-disciplinary subject. Students undertake the learning of a number of topics that stretch and help our students to become independent learners who are able to coherently form and communicate an argument. It provides training in essay writing, debate, textual analysis and research skills. Four units are taken from varying authors and cultural topics studied from the literature of Greek or Roman society. Texts are studied for their style and content but also within their respective contexts. Modules on offer in the past have included Greek and Roman Epic (Homer’s Iliad and Virgil’s Aeneid), Art and Architecture, Greek Tragedy (Drama), Roman Society and Thought, Roman Britain and City Life in Roman Italy (Pompeii, Herculaneum and Ostia). An interest in both literature and in the ancient world is therefore essential for this course. Visits to dramatic productions, museums and conferences are incorporated where possible. The Department also offers trips to Italy or Greece, which would also help your learning and understanding of the topic. In all study, work set will include reading ahead and preparing texts for lessons, essays and seminar work; we incorporate healthy debate wherever possible!
