AS There are two main areas for study at AS. One area includes ‘Global Challenges’ that explores the meaning, causes and impacts of a number of global issues that are very relevant to life in the 21st century and challenges us to find possible solutions. It considers topics from global warming through to the problems faced by population growth and migration. The other area involves the opportunity for both primary and secondary research into extreme weather, crowded coasts, unequal spaces or rebranding places. A2 There are also two main areas of study at A2. The ‘Contested Planet’ looks at six world issues. These are: energy security, water conflicts, biodiversity threats, superpowers, bridging the development gap and the technological fix. There is also the opportunity to link these topics together synoptically. The other area allows for the further development of investigative skills on topics that include cold climates, cultural diversity, pollution risks and food supply problems. The examination papers are diverse. Some questions will be based on resources that need data analysis and short answers while others will require longer guided essays. There is the pre-release of focus material for the final A2 modules. There is an emphasis on acquiring the skills that will be of value to students in future employment namely to be able to plan, collect and analyse a whole range of information and statistical data.
