The course is split into two years: AS and A2, both of which are weighted equally. The AS qualification introduces basic media concepts, and encourages students to think about how media texts are constructed to suit the needs of the audience. The coursework is a fantastic opportunity for students to enhance their production skills, as they have an opportunity to create several media texts in response to a research brief, ranging from music videos to real life documentaries. The A2 course looks to build on the media concepts of AS, whilst testing students' understanding of why media texts are constructed in a certain way. There is an expectation that students will use their awareness of wider context: such as political, economic, and societal issues, in order to successfully analyse the meaning of media texts. The coursework element of the course moves away from testing students' production skills (although these are still examined), and towards their ability to critically evaluate a media issue of their choice.
