Students of Drama and Theatre Studies work towards practical outcomes based on extensive theoretical knowledge. Knowing your own mind and expressing your opinion in an informed manner are key components of Drama. Most of the work involves a practical approach to plays which are studied from a performer or director’s perspective, or that of the theatre designer or critic. The choice of plays is made by the teacher to suit the interests and gender balance of the group. Students need creativity, energy and self-discipline to succeed at this level, but this is an academic course, not vocational training for actors. In Year 12 students complete the AS Edexcel Theatre Studies course. For Unit 1 students study two contrasting plays and explore these practically, learning about a variety of practitioners’ rehearsal approaches. Students complete coursework about their explorations and also evaluate a live theatre performance. For Unit 2 Section A students are required to perform a monologue or duologue from a published play and write their own performance concept. For Section B they are directed by their teacher in a group performance and assessed on their chosen performance skill.
