SWIFT & Vocational Courses There are many young people who, while enjoying their courses in school, would like to include specific practical elements in their curriculum. The SWIFT course offers a range of vocational subjects and the opportunity to gain an additional qualification at either level 1 or level 2. SWIFT learners will be out of school for one day a week over the period of one or two academic years during Key Stage 4. Xtend / Professional Scholarships (Gifted and Talented) The programme is aimed at able and motivated pupils who wish to gain additional qualifications in their own time. The main qualifications studied are either a GCSE or Level 2 BTEC. These twilight courses are offered to Year 10 and Year 11 learners. Usually starting at 4.15 or 4.30pm the lessons run for 2 or 2.5 hours one evening per week during term time. The duration is one academic year and courses usually run until the final examination. This is generally before May half term. Transport is not provided. New Start The programme is aimed at learners who are struggling to engage in a formal educational setting and who are at risk of exclusion (intervention level 2). These learners can benefit from studying in a fresh environment. Students on this course are referred by their school through the Area Behaviour Panel and are interviewed to determine suitability.
