English Language

UPDATED 20161028 09:10:32

The course offers the opportunity to develop an understanding of the ways in which we use our language and how it changes and adapts to meet different circumstances. You will study the development of English over time and its modern role as a global language; you will also learn how to write effectively for a range of audiences and purposes. The course gives insights into how language is used to construct meaning and influence ideas, including, for example, its importance in advertising, politics and the representation of different social groups. While the course focuses on English, many aspects are relevant to linguistics generally, that is, the scientific study of languages and how they function.
