Economics is rarely out of the news – in fact it very often is the news. Studying the subject at A-level will help you develop an understanding of current economic issues and problems as well as the institutions that affect our everyday lives. You will look at economic concepts and theories in a range of contexts and appreciate their value and limitations in explaining real world phenomena like market forces, inflation, unemployment and the role of the government. The course will also explore international, social and environmental issues. If you would like to develop an enquiring, critical and thoughtful ‘economist’s mind’ and prepare yourself with the skills, qualities and attitudes which will equip you for the challenges of a modern working life, this could be the course for you. CONTENT Paper One: Markets and Market Failure Data response and an essay The economic problem and economic methodology. Individual economic decision making. Price determination in a competitive market. Production, costs and revenue. Perfect competition, imperfectly competitive markets and monopoly. The labour market. The distribution of income and wealth: poverty and inequality. The market mechanism, market failure and government intervention in markets. Paper Two: The National and International Economy Data response and an essay The measurement of macroeconomic performance. How the macroeconomy works: the circular flow of income, aggregate demand/ aggregate supply analysis and related concepts Economic performance. Financial markets and monetary policy. Fiscal policy and supply-side policies. The international economy. Paper Three: Economic Principles and Issues. Multiple Choice Questions across the whole syllabus and case study questions.
