Chemistry is a central science, the study of which complements the study of all other science specialisms. The OCR Chemistry course allows for the inclusion of a lot of interesting practical work, which is an integral part of each unit. This serves to illustrate and reinforce the theoretical aspects of the subject. The aims of the course are to develop students’ interest in, and enthusiasm for Chemistry, including developing an interest in further study and careers in Chemistry. Further specific aims are: to appreciate how society makes decisions about scientific issues and how the sciences contribute to the success of the economy and society; to develop and demonstrate a deeper appreciation of the skills, knowledge and understanding of How Science Works; to develop essential knowledge and understanding of different areas of Chemistry and how they relate to each other. The specification has been written to follow from the study of GCSE Science and GCSE Additional Science or GCSE Chemistry. The mathematics needed for the course is covered within it, although a good pass in GCSE Mathematics should be seen as essential, especially in Year 13. Content If you choose to study Chemistry in Year 12 and 13 it is split into six modules; the modules can be summarised as: Module 1: Development of practical skills – this module underpins the whole of the specification, and covers the practical skills that students should develop throughout the course. The practical skills in this module can be assessed within written examinations and (for A-level only) within the Practical Endorsement. Module 2: Foundations in Chemistry – covering concepts required throughout the remaining modules i.e. in modules 3 and 4. Modules 3 and 4: Periodic table & energy and core organic chemistry. Modules 5 and 6: Periodic table, elements & physical chemistry and synthesis & analytical chemistry.
Name: A-level Chemistry Qualification title: GCE A Level in Chemistry A Qualification type: Assessment For A-level there are three written papers with their respective weightings:- 1. Periodic table, elements and physical chemistry 37% 2. Synthesis and analytical techniques 37% 3. Unified chemistry 26% In addition there is the ‘Practical endorsement for chemistry’ where candidates complete a minimum of 12 practical activities to demonstrate practical competence - some of these will be done during Year 12. Performance in this is reported separately to the A-level grade on a pass/fail. Awarding Oxford Cambridge & RSA Examinations Created 20150929 16:43:19 Updated 20161004 14:39:21
