A-level Art (Textiles)

This exciting and innovative course involves the creative use of Art Textiles. Students are taught Textiles skills such as printing, weaving, embroidery, appliqué, knitting and dyeing as well as constructing in fabric and contemporary materials. The department organises regular visits to national and international venues and arranges workshops with textile and printmaking artists. The portfolio developed during the course is used to produce a body of work for Foundation and Degree level course applications. Life drawing is also on offer which gives pupils a more mature and academic approach to the subject. CONT E N T Areas of study are intended to encourage exploration within either traditional or contemporary forms where students provide a variety of creative responses through a wide range of materials, processes and techniques.

Name: A-level Art (Textiles) Qualification title: GCE A Level in Art and Design Qualification type: Assessment A-level COMPONENT 1: 60% of qualification In Year 12, the course emphasis is on creativity and the production of an exciting body of work. Students are taught Textiles skills such as printing, weaving, embroidery, appliqué, knitting, dyeing and fabric painting as well as constructing in fabric. References to contemporary artists and designers are used to stimulate ideas. A-level ELEMENT 2: 40% of qualification A theme is given out by the exam board as a starting point for students’ own ideas. A body of work is generated and presented in A3 sketchbooks, with a final outcome produced during a 10 hour exam. A-level COMPONENT 3: 60% of qualification There are two parts to Year 13 coursework: 1. Personal Study – Students research designers/artists who they find inspiring and motivating and who reflect their own strengths and weaknesses. This phase of critical reference is more comprehensive than in previous units. 2. Practical work – This unit extends the opportunity for supported creative art textile development. Students will be expected to use textiles in individual, imaginative and interesting ways. A-level ELEMENT 4 (ESA): 40% of qualification A theme is given out by the exam board as a starting point for students’ own ideas. A body of work is generated and presented in sketchbooks, with a final outcome produced during a 15 hour exam. Throughout the exam period pupils are supported with workshops looking at new textiles techniques and guided and nurtured with individual tuition. *All units will be assessed by the Centre and externally moderated by a visiting moderator.
