You need to be interested in computers and how they work. For the programming unit, it helps if you are logical and enjoy problem solving. Computer Science is the study of how computers work and how they can be programmed to carry out tasks. The A level course covers theory in which you will study hardware and software. the hardware covers the basic parts of the computer and input and output devices. You will also learn about data transmission and networks, operating systems, databases and computer architecture. In the practical part of the course you will learn the stages of problem solving, leading on to the essentials of programming including games programming and how data is stored on a computer, as well as a practical project. Computer Science is an academic course designed to develop students capacity to think creatively, innovatively, analytically, logically and critically. You will learn through discussion, research, revision and problem solving tasks. The project is guided by a teacher and is very hands on. Computer Science combines well with A levels in Mathematics, Physics, Accounting or any other scientificmathematical discipline. Progression to any university course with Computing or Software Engineering in the title is possible, and Computing is regarded favourably by universities as a difficult subject which teaches higher level problem solving skills.
