Art & Design - Photography

UPDATED 20161019 12:57:13

ABOUT THE COURSE Students will be introduced to a variety of experiences that explore a range of photographic media, techniques and processes using both traditional and new technologies. To help inspire the theme of your personal investigations, trips will be organised to local galleries and there will also be opportunities to join trips to the major London galleries as well as receiving specialist critical writing support and advice from Merchants’ Academy’s connections with Bristol University’s History of Art undergraduates. Emphasis is placed on working independently and the large art rooms and resources available mean that there is no restriction on the scale of work. Students will be encouraged to explore challenging ideas and concepts to produce highly original and personal art work. HOW YOU WILL BE ASSESSED COMPONENT 1 – PERSONAL INVESTIGATION Students are required to conduct a practical investigation, into an idea, issue, concept or theme, supported by written material. The focus of the investigation must be identified independently by the student and must lead to a finished outcome or a series of related finished outcomes. COMPONENT 2 - EXTERNALLY SET ASSIGNMENT In February of Year 13, students will receive a question paper that has been compiled by the exam board. Students select one question from the paper and set about producing a project in response to the theme. SUPERVISED TIME: 15 HOURS Following the preparatory period, students must complete 15 hours of unaided, supervised time. The first 3 hours of the supervised time must be consecutive. In the 15 hours students must produce an outcome or a series of related finished outcomes, informed by their preparatory work. This time can be used to edit and manipulate photographs digitally and manually. For further information speak to a member of the Art & Design department or visit: www.aqa.org.uk
