On Friday, 18 September, 2015 40 year 10 and 11 GCSE drama students and their teachers attended a performance of the play RISE UP at the Redbridge Drama Centre, produced by the Theatre Centre. The play dealt with the historical aspect of the civil rights movement in the United States in the early 1960’s, focusing on the Freedom Riders movement to bring de-segregation to the American South. Using only four actors playing a variety of characters, and a basic set which represented the busses the Freedom Riders rode on, the play was an outstanding look at this time in US History seen through the eyes of British students. Our students behaved beautifully and were an appreciative audience, and they participated well in the post-performance question and answer. Many of the students have stated how excited they were by the performance, and that the play has given them good ideas for developing their own exam pieces.
