The art and design textiles course option gives candidates the opportunity to develop a very creative approach to the subject. The course is based on practical recording and experimentation and personal development of art textile concepts and responses to a wide range of briefs. The art and design textiles course allows students to develop a creative approach to textile design underpinned by art and design principles. A detailed study of textile design, processes, including printed textiles, woven, knitted, non woven, structural and decorative textiles. Fashion, accessories and interiors will be explored along with the study of textile artists and designers, working currently and historically. The first year of the course will involve producing a portfolio of work consisting of investigations, observational work, experimental ideas and more developed individual project work. The second year allows more extended development work. Students keen to pursue a possible career related to the textile industry may wish to opt for the product design textiles course and the creative art and design textiles option. Students develop a substantial portfolio of work which has enabled a number of highly committed students to gain places directly onto design degree courses. As well as career progression into fashion, interior design, accessories, costume and fashion journalism, art textiles offers opportunities for jobs within the media, teaching and other related creative careers. Visits to museums and galleries are encouraged as an integral part of the course. An experience of textiles is beneficial and a B grade or above in a related design, art or creative qualification is required with submission of a portfolio of work. The most important criterion is a strong interest in the subject area.
