General Studies is a key component of a well-rounded education and will widen the educational experience of students. This will distinguish them from the mass of applications for jobs or university courses. It provides students with an additional A-Level qualification which is accepted by many universities (especially those making points offers) alongside traditional subjects. It is increasingly being used as a way of gauging academic ability by university admissions tutors. As part of the enrichment programme at Diss Sixth Form Centre, those students with a high GCSE average points score will be invited to enter for the General Studies AS exam. The subject is not taught as a timetabled lesson and there is no coursework element. Those being entered at AS will be expected to spend one hour of their weekly private learning time exploring General Studies. Each week there will be a round-up of news items and editorial from the week’s papers put on the school network in order that students keep abreast of current local, national, and international issues.
