Diploma in Bricklaying (QCF)

This course aims to prepare you for employment and further training in the Construction industry. You will carry out your practical training in our dedicated workshops learning skills such as how to build a range of masonry structures and gain knowledge on how the construction industry operates, how to interpret working drawings and how buildings are constructed. You will visit real working sites where possible, and may even have opportunities to practice your new skills on real buildings. The course is approximately 50% practical and 50% theory, and your training will be carried out in our construction workshops, classrooms and newly built library. You will study different units which include practical activities in brickwork as well as developing employability skills and construction related health and safety. These include: Interpret working drawings to set out masonry structures - how you as a bricklayer would set out a building accurately to industrial standards. How to build solid walling, isolated and attached piers- - how you as a bricklayer would construct solid walling, attached and isolated piers.( garden walls etc.). Build cavity walling forming masonry structures - how you as a bricklayer would construct cavity walling as used in most house type construction. Building Methods - how buildings are built and the role you as a bricklayer would play. Communications- how the construction industry operates and communicates, and how you as a bricklayer would communicate with others. Functional Skills: English, Maths & IT (if you do not already hold this qualification or GCSE at grade C or above). Personal and Social Development: To prepare you for life outside college, helping you to find a job. You will have a Personal Tutor to help you on an individual basis to maximise your potential. You can also choose to study additional units for a broader insight into the construction industry. These include: Heritage- exploring buildings of our past.
