Ancient Britons, Saxons, Vikings and Romans all ventured across the sea from Europe and which piece of land did they arrive at first? The rochford Hundred! Our corner of Essex sandwiched between the Thames and the Crouch has welcomed (or not!) visitors and invaders for centuries. It has been the chosen residence of Lords and Barons for its proximity to London, of smugglers and highmen for its mysterious and remote coastal areas. Not just a commuter - belt suburb, the Rochford Hundred has a history as rich and varied as any area of Britain. This lecture aims to answer questions you may have: why did Rochford become the main town in this area? What happened to Rayleigh caslte? Who built Canewdon's massive church tower? Why is Shoebury split between Southend and Rochford councils? What ancient features can you still see today?
