There is much more to chemistry than white coats, laboratories and mixing chemicals together. If you've a passion for discovering how things work, using logic and analysis skills, then chemistry is the subject for you. AS Content 1 Physical chemistry - Including atomic structure, amount of substance, bonding, energetics, kinetics, chemical equilibria and Le Chatelier's principle. 2 Inorganic Chemistry Including periodicity, Group 2 the alkaline earth metals, Group 7(17) the halogens. 3 Organic Chemistry Including optical isomerism, aldehydes and ketones, carboxylic acids and derivatives, aromatic chemistry, amines, polymers, amino acids, proteins and DNA, organic synthesis, NMR spectroscopy, chromatography. Additional A Level content 1 Physical Chemistry Including thermodynamics, rate equations, equilibrium constant (K c ) for homogeneous systems, electrode potentials and electrochemical cells. 2 Inorganic Chemistry Including properties of Period 3 elements and their oxides, transition metals, reactions of ions in aqueous solution. 3 Organic Chemistry Including introduction to organic chemistry, alkanes, halogenoalkanes, alkenes, alcohols, organic analysis. Practical Work - A list of 12 required practical activities that students must carry out is provided by AQA. Exam questions will be based on these practicals. However, there will be many more practical opportunities for students throughout the course. AS Assessment Paper 1 (June 2016) Physical chemistry, inorganic chemistry and practical skills. 50% of AS Level. Paper 2 (June 2016) Physical chemistry, organic chemistry and practical skills. 50% of AS Level. A Level Assessment Paper 1 (June 2017) Physical chemistry, inorganic chemistry and practical skills. 35% of A Level. Paper 2 (June 2017) Physical chemistry, organic chemistry and practical skills. 35% of A Level. Paper 3 (June 2017) All content and practical skills.
