In this course we explore the idea of the artistic temperament being conventionally a rebel loner, creating outrage and shaking up the mores of society. From Charles Baudelaire's poem 'The Rebel' and his cry for artists to take to the streets, through the romantic rebellions of Lord Byron, to modern day 'bandits' such as Banksy we consider the idea of the lone wolf living on the edge of society, transcending its norms and strictures. Myth or reality? Who is centre stage? Who is footnoted in this drama of 'the artist' as a figure beyond the control of society? Is it now the convention to rebel? How does any artist overcome this convention of breaking with convention?
