Edward VIII announcing his abdication and Neville Chamberlain first declaring ‘peace for our time’ and then, less than a year later, that ‘this country is at war with Germany’ are perhaps the most famous British voices of the 1930s. But how did these two men come to make these speeches? The second part of this course on Britain in the 1930s will answer this question and many others. We will examine the issues and challenges faced by the British government and people from 1936 to the allied evacuation of Dunkirk in 1940. We will explore people’s attitudes to communism and fascism and to events abroad. We will assess how they prepared for war and focus on the success, or otherwise, of the planned evacuation of three million people in just a few days in September 1940. We will also consider the many other domestic challenges they faced in the first nine months of the war, from the problems of shortages and the dangers of bombing and spies to the fear of invasion.
