The course is linear with all assessment at the end of the two years. There are four components to the Pre-U: two of these are based on poetry, prose and drama texts. The third is an unseen comment and analysis paper with the opportunity for recreative writing. The fourth element is a personal investigation designed to encourage both wider reading for the analysis paper and to allow the student to pursue their own interests in literature. Students of Pre-U Literature study a range of texts from different historical periods and cultures. The course looks at writers’ techniques, the contexts in which authors write and interpretations we make. Lessons involve creative and critical responses in the form of seminar discussions, group work and presentations. Students are expected to have a passion for reading and the desire to read independently and widely. In the first term the course is devoted to encouraging wider reading and giving students a deeper understanding of things that influence writers. These include Greek and Roman myths, Arthurian legends, philosophical theories, Bible stories and schools of thought such as modernism and feminism.
