Jewellery and Silversmithing

The basics of jewellery-making in metal are covered through demonstrations and simple projects. Beginners will learn basic jewellery making skills such as piercing, filing, drilling, polishing, annealing and soldering. By the end of this course students should be able to, Cut and form sheet metal and wire, Anneal, texture and solder metal, Experiment with materials and finishes, Design and make a piece of work using skills you have learnt, Be aware of, and work to, health and safety guidelines, Please note that working in precious metals can be expensive. Students are encouraged to learn and practice their skills using copper - a much cheaper metal and then work their final piece in silver if desired . The Tutor can provide a base metal such as copper for a nominal cost and can then also advise where and how to purchase silver when needed, All tools are provided in a professional standard workshop. Students will be asked to pay for their own saw blades ( 50p each) and other materials as needed. This course at Tonbridge AEC will inspire and develop creativity in students wishing to learn jewellery making skills and making their own unique piece of jewellery . Entry requirements

Students will need to provide their own materials, fittings and findings, stones etc. The tutor can advise as to suitable supppliers . Please be aware that precious metal is expensive but copper and other metal is availble to buy at Tonbridge centre . This is ideal to practice on before buying silver .You may also like to purchase some hand tools to enable you to work at home (optional). A catalogue will be available at the class and the tutor will advise on purchases as required. There will be a small tool levy payable each term to cover the cost of replacing blades and breakages. Please bring a small sketchbook to the first session, wear old clothes and/or apron, closed toe shoes and be prepared to tie long hair back . Please note students are not allowed to drink in the studio and a water dispenser is situated nearby in reception. Please do not buy any other books or equipment before the start of the course. Please note that while on KCC property you are responsible for the safekeeping of your own personal property and items of work.
