If you want a career in the emergency services, including the police, fire and paramedics or a career in the military services or in public services such as the civil service or local government then a uniformed public services course could be for you. This level 2 course gives you an insight into working in the uniformed public services and offers the opportunity to develop the skills, personal qualities and experience that will help prepare you for further study or employment in this sector. You will learn about public services careers and employability skills; fitness, health, lifestyle, sport and recreation for the public services; teamwork and leadership: map/compass reading, expedition skills and experience; citizenship and society and crime and its effects. Approximately 40% of the course is practical and 60% is classroom work. There will be regular walks in the local area to practise navigation skills and camp-craft, which take place in all weathers. Taking part in a range of sports and fitness activities is a fundamental part of the course. Course enrichment activities can include visits, training days, physical activity development days and residential visits which offer you the chance to visit army bases and outdoor adventure activity centres. A range of public service organisations and guest speakers come into college. Experience of work can include working with community and voluntary organisations, major incident simulations with the NHS and fire service and support to police training.
