NCTJ Journalism Advanced Apprenticeship Level 3

UPDATED 20150212 16:47:14

The Journalism Advanced Apprenticeship is aimed at those who want to develop a career in journalism by combining learning at college with on-the-job training. This professional apprenticeship scheme has been developed by the NCTJ (National Council for the Training of Journalists) and employers in the media industry. You will gain valuable skills and knowledge needed to become a junior journalist. You could be working alongside experienced journalists in the newsroom of a local newspaper learning how to write an interesting, attention grabbing story. You will develop your skills in news reporting and feature writing and learn how to write shorthand. You will learn about public affairs for journalists, essential media law and regulation as well as gain experience of media law course reporting. As you progress through your apprenticeship you will develop a professional portfolio of work evidencing that you have met the learning outcome requirements. Possible employers on the apprenticeship are Sheffield Live TV, Sheffield Star, Derbyshire Times and the Doncaster Free Press. Whilst on this apprenticeship you will either be based with an employer for four days a week and have one day a week in college, or you will work full time for an employer and come to college for two lots of six weeks on block release. The college has links with employers and will try to place apprentices in employment, however this cannot be guaranteed so we recommend that you also look for your own employer.
