Extended Diploma in Horticulture (QCF)

This two-year course aims to provide a broad based training programme in horticulture, with specialist options in landscaping or amenity and decorative horticulture. All students study the following six core units: £Understand the principles of plant science £Understand the principles of soil science £Undertake and review work related experience in the land-based industries £Undertake an investigative project in the land-based sector £Business management in the land-based sector £Understanding land-based machinery operations In addition there are thirteen additional units from which the College selects the ones to deliver bearing in mind student employability. The teaching programme is centred on lectures with practical instruction, supported by assessments and assignment work, practical projects of an individual and group nature, and a practical work experience programme at the College, which is occasionally delivered off site at approved horticultural or turf related establishments. In mid-May of year one, students will have the opportunity to experience working in landscaping, amenity or decorative horticulture, golf or sports turf related employment. Every effort is made to select work placements of direct interest to the student, which will provide valuable experience in support of future entry into employment, with many students gaining full-time employment with their work experience provider. One day each week will be spent practising your skills by carrying out work experience on the College campus under the direction of technicians or instructors. You will follow a specially devised programme designed to develop your practical skills to the level of skill expected by industry so that you are fully ready to take up your chosen career at the end of your course.
