How can we ‘read’ a cosmopolitan and multi-faceted city like London? How is it represented and experienced? Through taught classes and guided walks, this course examines the transition from rural to urban culture and considers specific historical moments in the life of the capital. The city is considered as both the subject and object of study as we look at how it is represented in literature, film, television and music, as well as the spaces of pleasure and possibilities it offers the visitor. The course will help you think about the relationship between identity and place and how different social groups experience the city. From the music hall and the spirit of the Blitz to the riots of 2011 and the 2012 Olympic Games we consider the cultural and social dimensions that constitute London as a global and multicultural city.
