English Literature (A2 Level)

UPDATED 20150320 09:45:30

If you enjoy reading, you will enjoy this course! English Literature offers you the opportunity to explore a range of work including; contemporary novels, classical plays and 20th century poetry, to help improve your writing styles and develop your analytical skills. At A2 the texts studied are challenging, we look in more detail at the way we respond to a text as a reader and consider the fact that there are many different ways to 'read' a literary text. A2 English Literature covers the following units: Texts and Genres: In this unit you will be studying "Elements of the Gothic". The Three texts you will be reading to explor the nature of the gothic as a genre are: MacBeth by William Shakespeare, Dracula by Bram Stoker and The Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter. You will be examined on the three texts at the end of the year and the questions will focus on how each of the literary texts employs 'elements of the gothic'. Further and Independent Reading: This unit is assessed through two pieces of coursework. The first of which requires students to make comparisons across two literary texts. This first essay gives students the opportunity to make their own decision about the literary texts they would like to use as the foundation for their essay. The second essay asks students to re-visit literary texts they have studied in the past and try to consider them in a new light. As part of the course you will be expected to: Read lots! You will need to spend a lot of your own time on independent reading. Discuss texts in class and engage in critical debates on the texts we study. Analyse drama, prose and poetry and develop the techniques to analyse each genre. Teaching is mostly by open discussion and debate and students are encouraged to develop their own personal, critical voice in responding to a literary text.
