Level 3 Diploma for the Children and Young People's Workforce

UPDATED 20131216 12:41:13

Who is it for? Anyone working as a practitioner in a wide range of children and young people’s settings. The early years pathway of the Level 3 Diploma is recognised as a ‘full and relevant’ Level 3 qualification for the purpose of the EYFS. What is the structure? Level 3 Diploma consists of three specialist pathways: early years, children’s social care and learning development and support services. You must achieve 65 credits in total. Everyone, regardless of pathway, takes 11 core units, making up 27 credits. Four of these units are common to everyone in the care sector and the other seven are specifically for those working with children and young people. You also take another group of units which are specific to your chosen pathway. The units in the early years pathway make up 22 credits, those in the other pathways make up 13. Finally, you select optional units from a wide choice, to top up your credits to the required total of 65. This means that, for candidates on the early years pathway, the optional units must make up 16 credits: for the other pathways the total is 25. Where will it take me? A Level 3 Diploma allows you to manage a setting. However, you can develop your career further by undertaking the Level 5 Diploma in Leadership. This is a new and challenging programme offering excellent career progression and professional development while also acting as a bridge to higher education: most colleges will treat it as giving access to the second year of a foundation degree. Alternatively if you wish you can move straight to a foundation degree and eventually secure Early Years Teacher status.
