Mechanical craftsmen and craftswomen typically move into a wide range of occupations throughout the UK and overseas either as a Mechanical Fitter or as a Mechanical Production Technician formally known as a Turner/Machinist. Mechanical fitters typically work in large process type organisations or for small and large engineering contractors who undertake maintenance and shutdown work for industrial clients. Mechanical Technicians are responsible for the commissioning, assembling, installation and maintenance of industrial plant equipment, such as valve, gearboxes, turbines, compressors, pipelines, pumps and heat exchangers.
