Personal Safety - Use of protective clothing appropriate to the process to be undertaken i.e. goggles, gloves, aprons etc. - Isolation procedures for gas and electrical systems - Remedial action in the event of burns - Routine inspection of electrical cables, gas pipes and fittings - Action in the event of arc eye and gas leaks Equipment - Safe setting up and economic operation of welding equipment to include: - Connection of gas and electrical equipment - Fitting and adjustment of equipment - Selection of the tungsten polarity - Checking of system for safe use - Adjustment of arc length Preparation - Preparation of the material to be welded to produce correct joints, gas etc using appropriate equipment -Technique to be used on the various joints and materials - Methods of minimising didtortion and welding difficulties Practical -Demonstration and individual practice of welded joints using a selection of aluminium, steel and stainless steel sections of various thickness: -Tee joint – horizontal/vertical – aluminium – stainless steel -Tee joint – vertical – aluminium – stainless steel -Corner joint – vertical – aluminium – stainless steel -Pipe butt – mild steel -Pipe butt (purge) – stainless steel Inspection and Assessment -To visually examine the weld for: -Penetration -Porosity -Undercutting -Imperfections -Recognition of the causes of imperfections and identification of corrective action
