Course outline: In Sociology, we are trying to understand our society. You are encouraged to discuss your ideas and to think critically about the world. At AS we investigate youth culture, education and how to study society. At A2 we study crime and deviancy, poverty and inequality. No previous knowledge of Sociology is necessary to start this course but you will need to bring a willingness to look searchingly at the world we live in. Sociologists examine the nature and composition of society, so we deal with such topics as youth culture, ethnicity, social class, gender, education, crime and deviancy. You will also learn sociological methods and how to apply them - that is, the ways we can analyse and draw conclusions about aspects of society we wish to investigate, together with sociological theory which underlies research.
