Today more than at any time in the past Social Enterprises are operating in almost every industry in the UK and across the globe. There is no UK-wide legal definition of a social enterprise but essentially they are businesses with primarily social objectives whose surpluses are principally reinvested for that purpose in the business or in the community, rather than being driven by the need to maximize profit for the shareholders and owners. It is in that respect the programme will focus on how social enterprises differ from other businesses the differences between cooperatives, mutual organisations, charities and social businesses. As with all businesses, they compete to deliver goods and services. The difference is that social and environmental purposes are at the very heart of what they do and the profits they make are reinvested towards achieving those purposes. Well known examples of social enterprises include the Eden Project, Big Issue and the Phone Co-op. In the programme you will learn about the fundamentals of business and social enterprise, business ethics, marketing and the historical and contemporary issues in social enterprise. This will be alongside developing your critical skills and personal strengths.
