To gain an A level in Mathematics you must study six units, four of which are Pure Mathematics. These are called Core 1 to Core 4. The remaining two modules are applied modules such as Mechanics or Statistics. The AS Level consists of Core Maths 1, Core Maths 2 and usually either Statistics 1 or Mechanics 1. You can find detailed information on the website: www.mei.org.uk. Year 1 • Algebra, Trigonometry, Geometry and Calculus are all examples of Pure Maths topics in the first year. In addition, if you are studying Statistics, you would also look at topics such as Probability and Hypothesis Testing. Year 2 • Numerical Methods, Vectors and Further Calculus are all examples of topics you will study in the second year. In addition, if you are studying Mechanics, you would also look at topics such as Forces and Projectiles.
