Korean Traditional Dance

UPDATED 20170124 11:16:51

The class aims to introduce traditional Korean dance, rhythms and its essence to learners. The curriculum focuses on offering both the traditional dance and music skills with a dynamic Sogo dance (Sogo = a small drum, Chum = dance). Students will learn the basic steps of the Sogo dance to understand the fundamental principles of traditional Korean dance such as: the special ways of breathing, proper body alignment, a feeling of suspension (particularly using the feet), the way of playing Sogo, and the heaviness and curvilinear shapes of movements. With the embodied and somatic approach of a traditional Korean dance, the class will enhance students' muscular strength, flexibility, and the ability to consciously perceive and analyse their internal and external movements. In addition, learning drumming dance with a dynamic beat of Korea helps the students to not only reduce their stress but also understand the basic rhythms of traditional Korean folk music as well.
