Mosaic is a versatile and decorative craft using a wide variety of styles, materials and techniques, making it appealing to all levels of expertise. Students will be instructed in the traditional techniques of producing mosaics.The course will start with the direct mosaic technique and gradually move on to other methods; initially the tutor will demonstrate basic mosaic techniques such as; planning your design on paper, choosing a colour scheme, transferring your design to a mosaic base, cutting and shaping tessarae, placing and adhering tessarae on your chosen base, grouting the design and cleaning the finished product. , , Learning outcomes. On the course you will:, - Identify a variety of mosaic materials, methods and tools, - Cut and shape tessarae using appropriate tools, - Plan and produce a mosaic design / template, - Choose tessarae suitable for intended use, - Cut and apply tessarae to prepared substrate, - Grout and finish mosaic piece, - Work to relevant Health and Safety guidelines, The course is suitable for all students who have some manual dexterity.

Entry requirements

Because each student will require differing amounts and types of materials, we have to charge for them at cost. Any costs are paid in class at the time of requiring the materials., For the first session please bring a 12mm thickness piece of MDF (no bigger than A3 size) for you mosaic base, or an unglazed earthenware pot of a manageable size, (bring frost proof if project intended for outdoor use). , You should bring paper/sketchpad, pencils and a notebook. Essential tools include a tile nipper although we will be able to supply these in the lesson. Details of the cost of materials and basic tools will be discussed at the beginning of the course. If equipment and materials are required for this course you should not buy them before the first class unless advised other wise, or you are sure that the course is running., Health and Safety:, You must wear closed-toe shoes, All masks, gloves and ear defenders will be supplied if necessary, No food or drink isallowed in the studio because of the possible risks of contamination., Equipment required Because each student will require differing amounts and types of materials, we have to charge for them at cost.
