We hear a lot about the Home Front of the World War 2 and its subsequent impact on society, but the story of the Home Front in World War 1 has been largely forgotten. After the relatively cosy world of the first fourteen years of the century, the advent of war changed everything., This course provides an introduction t life in Britain on the 'Home Front' during the centenary year of the outbreak of World War 1. What was life away from the Front like for ordinary people? What hardships and pressures existed? How did attitudes change during the five years of war?, Individuals' wartime experiences will be linked to broader social changes during this tumultuous period of British history. Learners will have an opportunity to conduct their own research and to share findings with the group and possibly others., At the end of the course students should be able to:, • Demonstrate some knowledge and understanding of people's experiences during WW1, • Relate these experiences to broader changes in society , • Demonstrate and use basic research skills by looking into the lives of family members or local communities, • Give a brief account of at least one major aspect of life in wartime Britain, In this centenary year the course has a wide appeal to those interested in British social history during the early twentieth century and the 1914-18 period in particular.
