Creative Writing - Writer In Role - a New Approach to Playwriting

This course is designed to encourage aspiring and more experienced playwrights to produce new writing. With the focus on the dramatic mode students will work creatively in response to a number of stimuli in order to write scenes and to explore the appropriate mode of language for the subject matter. Dorothy Heathcote's approach of:' teacher in role' has proved to be a highly effective method of encouraging students at all levels through improvisation to extend their use of language in a number of situations., New writing will be initiated building on this model and students will experiment with the script developing the language from the concept of: "writer in role" in order to extend both the literary and dramatic aspect of their work and to lend a "cutting edge" to the finished product.The students will initiate the production of new writing from a number of approaches:, • analysis and exploration of the text of established playwrights in the business of communication through the created role , • the audience' response/ "reading" of the role , • exercises in writing in specific literary modes informed by examples from the text e.g. narrator, persona, • exploring producing new scenes through the 'teacher in role' approach to improvisation, • "Writer in role"; experience more challenging roles of the student's choice in order to facilitate the new writing in an exciting environment of 'creative learning' with the group, , At the end of the Course the student will be able to:, • analysis and appreciation in the discussion of texts in the group from a literary and dramatic viewpoint will add depth to the production of the, students' own scenes, • communicate with confidence through writing and Drama in a variety of literary modes ranging from storytelling (Brecht) to the reflective thought of theatre of the Absurd (Becket), • produce a scene each week of new writing, • deepen role to lend a "cutting edge" to new dramatic writing in the production of literary
