OCR Advanced Level in Physical Education

For Physiological factors affecting performance students will study how the body's systems prepare for exercise, respond to exercise and recover post-exercise. This includes detailed physiological knowledge of the muscles and bones, structure and function of the heart and lungs and understanding of the basic concepts of biomechanics. Students will also need to understand how muscles contract, how the heart and breathing rates are controlled. For Skill Acquisition students will study the classifications of skills, types and methods of practice, the transfer of skills principles and theories of learning movement skills, stages of learning, guidance and feedback. Students will need to have an appreciation of the advantages and disadvantages associated with the various theories. For Sport and Society students will study the evolution and emergence of modern sport and global sporting events, how socio-cultural factors have affected the emergence of various sport, along with how contemporary factors (such as globalisation, time and money) have affected sports too. Lastly, students will study the modern Olympics and other global events such as the FIFA World Cup in terms of the positive and negative effects these have on the host country. For Performance in Physical Education students need to demonstrate, apply and analyse their knowledge and understanding of the factors that underpin performance and involvement in physical activity and sport. Students must demonstrate and apply their relevant skills and techniques in physical activity and sport and analyse and evaluate performance.
