UPDATED 20170112 13:18:20

Term 1 - Modern Letterforms (Textural Art) This course will introduce students to the writing and drawing of letters as textural art. The course will concentrate on the process of developing shapes from original forms of letters, and then extracting those shapes to make experimental calligraphic artistic pieces. Term 2 - Modern Writing (Calligraphic marks) On this course we will work with your chosen images of textures (such as photos from nature) and your chosen text, related to the image. We will begin with making lines and marks that are found in nature using different tools and mediums. Then we will write our chosen text with those lines and marks to develop our own textures. The course includes an introduction to modern writing with pointed pen. Term 3 - Experimenting Letterforms (Formal to Gestural) This workshop is based on the observation that excessive speed is not essential for good gestural writing. In this workshop we start with formal writing and will explore what happens to letterforms if we speed up. We will catalogue the possible changes and then integrate these little variations into our script in a deliberate and well-considered wayTerm 1 - Modern Letterforms (Textural Art) We will start by studying several traditional letterforms with different tools (folded pen, pointed brush, automatic pen, etc) to explore the possibilities of the forms. Then we will design our own monoline letterforms to suit the meaning of your chosen text. We will experiment with how we can further develop those forms. In the course of the workshop, basic design, layout and composition as well as use of colour and different writing surfaces will be presented, leading to you creating several experimental calligraphic pieces. We will do step-by-step exercises and end by binding our work into a modern book form. Term 2 - Modern Writing (Calligraphic marks) This course will start with an introduction to Modern Writing with pointed pen. Then through a series
