Visual Arts & Design

UPDATED 20170106 11:39:11

Creative and passionate students are welcomed to the Visual Arts and Design department. You will study traditional and contemporary techniques in visual arts, sculpture, drawing and painting, and will also have the opportunity to explore a variety of specialist areas including fashion, illustration, community art, textiles, photography, digital design and fine art. We deliver a vocational qualification that enables students a greater understanding of the creative industries. This exciting department offers a wide range of excellent brand new facilities, including visual arts studios, a print and textiles studio, photography darkroom and computer suite for developing visual arts and design work. Students develop work in a variety of areas, including fine art, graphics, textiles, photography, fashion illustration and community art. They can exhibit their work throughout the year and in a showcase at the end of the course, which has become renowned for its high standard. Students have gone on to foundation and degree courses at top art colleges, including Central St Martins, Camberwell, SLADE, Glasgow School of Art, Ravensbourne and Chelsea. The department undertakes, as part of the curriculum, community arts projects and cross curricular projects, which enrich the vocational curriculum enormously through client-based projects. Students are encouraged to enter competitions in which they have been most successful both within the school and externally. Recent activities include external exhibitions at the Horniman Museum and Dulwich Picture Gallery, creating a visual awareness campaign for MIND visits and workshops from professional artists, animators, graphic designers and gallery visits.
