The arts are an important and recurring part of human life and culture. They attract the attention and support from government, commerce and the public at large, but what makes something 'art', and why should we value it? These are practical questions for those involved in the support of the arts, but they are also theoretical questions with which philosophers have been concerned for more than 2,000 years. Over that long period a number of important theories concerning 'what is art?' have been developed and explored, and the purpose of this course is to introduce newcomers to the world of aesthetics and art theory to both the problems and their resolution. Philosophy of art is simply an attempt to resolve these problems in a sustained and coherent way, while drawing upon the thinking of the major philosophers who have devoted most attention to them. This course is an introductory course primarily concerned with applying philosophy to the subject of aesthetics in order to understand aesthetics; it does not set out to provide a comprehensive treatment of art history, art criticism or good/bad art etc. These topics will be encountered and discussed as our enquiry proceeds.
