Supporting Children with Special Educational Needs

This course will provide a basic introduction to working with and supporting children with Special Educational Needs. You will have learnt how to communicate effectively with a child who has SEN. You will be able to identify some of the skills and knowledge employers are looking for when recruiting for example; Understand the causes of SLCN, Become familiar with common support strategies and be able to use simple techniques to encourage and support students with SLCN. The course will be delivered in a classroom environment through a variety of tutor led and group based activities. All materials will be provided. This course will not provide you with a formal qualification, but you will receive a certificate upon successful completion of the course which you can show to prospective employers. There are a number of options open to you at the end of this course including:- Applying for work or volunteering as a teaching assistant- Applying for an apprenticeship as a teaching assistant- Applying for a place on an accredited course (see B&W College for details)- Enrolling on another adult education course to improve your skills further. These options will be explored during the course and you will have the opportunity to discuss your ideas with an adviser from the National Careers Service.
