Technical Author apprentices spend the first 24 months of their apprenticeship gaining experience and knowledge in electrical engineering craft skills. This forms the foundation of their apprenticeship. During this period the apprentices gain experience of Basic electronics, control and instrumentation techniques and equipment before moving onto electrical maintenance and installation skills such as cable support systems, electrical wiring and testing and inspection. This is in preparation for the on-site phase where they put the first 2 years of their apprenticeship into practice when they join AWE's maintenance teams for 12 months followed by 12 months in the technical authoring departments to learn the technical and reporting skills needed for their final role. During the apprenticeship you also study at college to gain a level 4 Technical Certificate (HNC). All practical training is completed in the AWE Skills Academy and via work placements within our business. Qualifications gained include BTEC Higher National certificate NVQ 4
