Mechanical maintenance apprentices spend the first 9 months of their apprenticeship learning mechanical engineering craft skills. This forms the foundation of their apprenticeship. During this period the apprentices gain experience of turning, milling, grinding and bench fitting. After the initial year a further 9 months is spent specialising in mechanical maintenance. Where the apprentices spend time gaining experience and knowledge required for maintaining the sites mechanical systems. The following disciplines are covered: Steam systems Vacuum systems Ventilation systems Compressed air systems Throughout these 1.5 years apprentices undertake NVQ level 2 units and also study at college to gain a level 3 Technical Certificate. This is in preparation for the third yphase where they put the first 1.5 years of their apprenticeship into practice when they join AWE's maintenance sections to further enhance their skills. All practical training is completed in the AWE apprentice and Academy and via work placements within our business. Qualifications gained are NVQ3 engineering maintenance National certificate (as appropriate) Functional skills at level 2
