Open all Hours: A Historical Perspective of Local Retail and Business

The course is open to anyone with or without experience of studying Local History who is particularly interested in learning about the history of local retail and business practice in Newcastle and the surrounding area. No previous experience is required. The course will provide a nostalgic insight and analytical study into the various business outlets that historically had an impact on our region including working people, range of merchandise, customers and types of business practices. We will compare and contrast how businesses and the community operated in the past with their current methods of operation Through a variety of strategies - short lectures, discussions, question/answer sessions, interactive work and other research to ensure optimum learning in this subject area. Your tutor will continually observe and support you and give you regular feedback about your progress. You will complete varied exercises including group work and written work. There is no external assessment for this course. Learners can opt to have an internal certificate. Your tutor will be able to advise at the end of the course No specific equipment needed except pen and paper. • How shopping was conducted in 19th and early 20th century Britain • A nostalgic insight into the various businesses that shaped the North East including Maynard's, Fenwick's, Woolworths, Bainbridge's and many more. • Staffing in businesses and its historical profile • The changing face of the high street and the impact of super/hyper markets • How the Metro Centre is reviewed 30 years after its initial opening • Market trading and its historical impact - new horizons and developments to compare and contrast
