Get Started with Art

This course would suit anyone who has an interest in art and is looking to get started with drawing and watercolour painting. No previous experience is required You will explore the basics of linear drawing. Then you will paint with watercolour exploring brushstrokes and the dilution of pigment using landscape, still-life and portrait as subject matter. We will also look at basic colour mixing and touch on the colour theory that lies behind the actions of the paints. Finally, you create a simple watercolour painting that shows your new knowledge of colour mixing and brush handling. You will also be required to create a portfolio of your work accompanied by written reflective commentary. Through demonstration and one-to-one tutoring you will undertake exercises and create a finished portfolio of artworks. Your portfolio of work will be shown to your tutor who will advise you on progress and provide feedback. You can progress onto other arts courses in a choice of subjects. Your tutor will be able to advise. For drawing you will require a 2b pencil, erasure, and pencil sharpener plus drawing paper. For painting you will require a set of watercolour paints, a palette, water pot, watercolour paper, a range of brushes and a roll of masking tape. You will need the drawing materials for the first class. You may wish to be shown and talked through the painting kit required before you purchase painting materials.
