Get Started with Sewing

Anyone interested in learning the skills to confidently use a sewing machine and progress onto other sewing projects. None. You will learn the use of a sewing machine, its applications and basic maintenance. You will also learn about different fabrics and how to use them. You will learn a range of beginners sewing techniques such as sewing simple hems and seams, applique and basic pockets. By the end of the course you will be able to make either a simple garment or an item for around the home. Practical lessons, demonstrations and one-to-one support from the tutor Progress will be monitored on a weekly basis with one-to-one discussion beteen the tutor and yourself. You will build up a portfolio of sample work. NOCN Entry Level Award in Skills for Employment, Training and Personal Development A range of sewing-related courses. Your tutor will be able to advise further. Some equipment and materials will need to be provided by you. You should be prepared to bring scissors, pins, needles, threads and a tape measure, plus fabric to make your chosen item(s). Sewing machines and irons are provided. Costs will vary according to the material chosen, so for further guidance on cost please contact the centre. Fabric - properties and selection Measuring, cutting and stitching fabric Planning and developing ideas to make simple items such as a cushion cover Basic machine maintenance such as checking tension and diagnosing stitching faults Health & Safety Sewing simple seams and hems Sewing basic pockets Applique and embellishments Using a sewing machine and its various applications.
