This course is suitable for those who own a guitar and would like to improve their ability to play the instrument with a view to performing in a class ensemble and/or solo. It is also suitable as a progression for those who have completed last term's Come and Try Guitar taster course. You do not need any formal qualifications to do the course. You should be able to play basic guitar chords and be able to strum rhythms. You do not need to be able to read music however a basic understanding of guitar tablature will be an advantage. You will look at the guitar and its repertoire, concentrating on faster and more fluid chord changes, alternate strumming patterns and correct fingering. You will be introduced to new chords and look at using standard tuning on a guitar to your advantage. Repertoire will centre around Rock, Pop and Folk with scope for learners to input their own musical tastes and preferences. The course will focus on creating ensemble pieces and encouraging individual creativity. You will learn through demonstrations, practical work with your instruments and listening to songs whilst following them on notation or chord sheets that will be provided. Your tutor will continually observe and support you and give you regular feedback about your progress. You will compile a simple portfolio as evidence of your learning. NOCN Entry Level Award in Skills for Employment, Training and Personal Development. Your tutor will be able to advise at the end of the course. You should bring your own guitar - acoustic or electric. A tuner, a plectrum, a pen/pencil and folder to keep your handouts/portfolio in. Building up a repertoire of chords (including major, minor and seventh variations Extending the range of rhythmic strumming patterns Playing in an Ensemble Guitar Tablature Time signatures Performing solo (optional)
