Get Started with Ukulele

This course is suitable for those who would like to begin or develop their playing of the ukulele. You do not need any formal qualifications to do the course. No previous knowledge of the Ukulele is required. You do not need to be able to read music however a basic understanding of Ukulele tablature will be an advantage. You will look at the Ukulele and its repertoire, concentrating on increasing speed and fluidity of chord changes, rhythmic strumming patterns and correct fingering. You will be introduced to new chords and look at using standard re-entrant tuning on a Ukulele to your advantage when playing melodies. Repertoire will centre around Rock, Pop and Folk songs/tunes with scope for learners to input their own musical tastes and preferences. The course will focus on creating ensemble pieces and encouraging individual creativity. You will learn through demonstrations, practical work with your instruments and listening to songs/tunes whilst following them on chord sheets and notation that will be provided. Your tutor will continually observe and support you and give you regular feedback about your progress. You will compile a simple portfolio as evidence of your learning NOCN Entry Level Award in Skills for Employment, Training and Personal Development. Your tutor will be able to advise at the end of the course. A Soprano, Concert or Tenor size Ukulele in standard C tuning, a tuner, a pen/pencil and a folder to keep your handouts and portfolio in. Concert size is generally the best for most adults. Building up a repertoire of chords (including major, minor and seventh variations Extending the range of rhythmic strumming patterns Playing in a class Ensemble Ukulele Tablature and finger picking Time signatures Performing solo (optional)
