This course is for adults who wish to improve their reading, writing and communication skills and who would like to gain a nationally recognised qualification at Level 1 or 2. This course is centred on improving individual's speaking and listening, reading and writing skills. Learners will be reading and summarising different types of text, identifying suitable responses, presenting information in a logical sequence and will be responding to text using language both appropriate to purpose and audience. You will also be exploring the difference between formal and informal language and will demonstrate these differences through group discussions, presentations and written activities.

All new students are given a quick assessment so that lessons can be designed with their individual needs in mind. For some, this will include help with basic reading and writing skills. All students will be working towards an Edexcel Functional Skills qualification at either Level 1 or Level 2. Students are expected to complete at least 20 minutes homework at week. Typically this will involve trying out a skill introduced during the lesson or producing a short piece of writing.
